aw, Drake is so sweet. I like the fact that he’s not all stuck up like most rappers :)

  4. DRB

    January 15th, 2011 at 10:08 am

    For me-

    Best New Artist: Florence

Best Rap Solo: Eminem, then maybe Drake probably- IDK any of those are that strong and Kanye needs to fuck off.

Best Rap Album: BP3 for me but probably Recovery or The Roots (which I’ve never listened to)

Rap Duo/Group: On The Next for me, the Drake

So…. hope he isn’t too disappointed if he doesn’t win anything. Eminem is going to shit on everyoe, then Jay’s runner up, then Drake fits in.

Drizzy should win best new artist, in my opinion. Forget Not Afraid though, best rap solo should be Power, if not Power, I’d be cool w/ Over though. Best rap album, idk rly, Eminem’s prolly winning that hands down. Rap duo/group should be Drake though for Fancy. On to the next one wasn’t that great 2 me.

DRB, you sound like you hate Kanye. Kanye West is an egomaniac, and a loose cannon, but Kanye West always makes great music just as much as Drake. The only people who hate Kanye West are the media, and mainstream fans who never listen to any of his music. He might not be a very, good person but every album he has made has sold over a million copies to this point. His music is undeniable, 4 platinum albums, and a potential 5th platinum album says alot. I’m not just saying this because I’m a Kanye fan, but I am also a Drake fan, I say that Kanye and Drake are both at the top. Don’t just say fuck off without giving hardcore details to back up any venom you may have towards another artist.

I want to see Drake win something, but if Drake loses, then Kanye West will be deserving since Power is a great song. I think Eminem is going to win a lot of awards for Recovery.

    Aww nice :)

He should win some of those that night, particularly the album and solo performance

    Yay Drake!

    Respectful man.

I think he’s going to win the best rap/duo for Fancy and prolly the best new artist. Eminem will win the others..

Life is anything but a beach for "Real Housewives of Atlanta" stars Nene and Greg Leakes.  Greg's 34-year-old son, Damian Leakes, is now spilling the beans about his stepmama and Greg.  And it ain't pretty.

Read on for the divorce details Nene doesn't want you to know...

Who needs enemies when you've got family like this?  Greg's son, Damian, and Nene's step-son, has been threatening to air out his parents' dirty laundry for a while now.

Damian recently told Radar that Greg and Nene are on the verge of making their divorce happen, despite Nene telling press and media that reports of their split are untrue.  She claims they are just going through a rough patch but she has not moved on to another man and they are very much still together, even though we can't remember the last time we saw her wearing her wedding ring.

But it gets worse.  Damian says once Greg married Nene after meeting her at the gentlemen's club, he kicked all his kids out of the house!

"Once he met her he kicked us out of the house," Damian said, "the young siblings went to my mom's, and he just ran off to start a whole new life literally in front of our faces."

The kids have never been acknowledged on the show.  And now, Greg is demanding Nene to pay him back a whopping $300,000 he allegedly spent to make her a star-uh.  Not sure if that includes all the body sculpting she recently got done.

Damian says, "Nothing has been filed, but lawyers have been retained," Damian said.

"Gregg is also trying to get $300,000 back, but NeNe doesn't want to give him anything.

"She (NeNe) wants to keep the house and move on with her life. They're trying to portray it as 'we're not getting divorced' and they're trying to work it out right now, but that's not the case."

Damian said, "She wants to keep the house and move on with her life. They're trying to portray it as 'we're not getting divorced' and they're trying to work it out right now, but that's not the case."

And about where all the couple's so-called money came from:

"That's pretty much what the kids are trying to figure out because we never knew that that kind of money was available or within reach to put into that kind of project," Damian said.

"At the time when the show started was when we all started really bumping heads with NeNe and Greg.

Damian claimed the hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on NeNe was used to portray "a lifestyle."

"You have to keep up with the Joneses, so to speak," Damian said.

On where all that money went:

"He [Gregg] feels like he put her where she is... he feels that she wouldn't be anywhere if he didn't give her the money to put her where she needs to be.

"He feels like he made her because he gave her a lifestyle everyone wanted to see. She feels like he should have supported her and had her back. NeNe does have a selfish quality and so does Gregg and eventually over time they're going to butt heads like what they're doing now.

"They're both stubborn. No one wants to give up anything. Everyone wants to say it's you're fault.

"My dad has always wanted to -- even if he didn't have it -- live the good life. And when they got together it was a monster being created. And this is what happens when the monster grows three heads.

We haven't verified this is his actual Twitter account yet, but it's looking like it is.  Here's what he said back in August when he was trying to sell this story to our homies over at Allhiphop:

@allhiphopcom got sum REAL dirt on my stepmom nene leakes. On my dad greg too. Tried 2 spare em but fuck it

This greg son. Tired of da leakes name being dogged out. We bout to expose greg AND nene. Stay tuned

8:12 PM Aug 24th, 2010 via mobile web .There are ALOT of secrets! This is Greg leakes son. The REAL leakes family is tired of the b.s.! Time to expose the TRUTH!

Wow.  Let the Splitsville drama continue...

Making Money Web

Bump Technologies makes an app that lets people bump their phones together to exchange things like business cards, photos and even money.

On Tuesday, Bump will announce that it has raised $16.5 million in venture capital. The firm Andreessen Horowitz is Bump’s newest investor, and its previous investors, including Sequoia Capital and Ron Conway, also contributed.

Bump started in 2008 as a way for people to exchange contact information without trading old-fashioned paper business cards. But in its newest incarnation, the start-up wants to become a mobile social network for exchanging photos and messages with family and friends.

Now, in addition to contact information, people with iPhones or Android phones can share photos, music, calendar appointments and location, and can also become friends on social networks and send messages to one another. Other apps also use the technology. PayPal, for instance, lets people exchange money by bumping their phones, and two apps trade sexual compatibility information.

The company is changing direction because people started using Bump more for social interactions than business ones, said two of its founders, David Lieb and Jake Mintz. For example, each day people now share about 40,000 contacts but almost a million photos.

“Bump just opens up a whole new landscape of social interactions and interpersonal functions and uses and photo-sharing and transactions, all based on physical proximity,” said Marc Andreessen, the Andreessen Horowitz partner who will join Bump’s board.

There are many other social networks that people already use on their phones to share photos, location and status updates, like Facebook, Foursquare and Instagram.

Bump is different, the founders said, because it enables private exchanges between two people, unlike others that are for publishing messages or photos to wider groups or the public.

“It’s a proximity-based social network, for people and things you’re actually physically interacting with,” Mr. Lieb said.

Bump is one of a group of mobile apps that give people a way to use Internet-connected cellphones to bridge the virtual and physical worlds.

That could become a way to make money, the founders said. For example, people could someday bump their phones to get information or coupons from businesses or brands. “That could be valuable to merchants,” Mr. Mintz said.

Other apps, like Shopkick, offer similar ways for businesses to reach customers. Bump is not making money yet, beyond a bit from other companies that license its technology.

Bump works by gathering several signals from phones, including location and motion detection. Those signals are sent to Bump’s servers, where Bump figures out if another phone in the same place just experienced a bump, then matches the two phones. It all takes place immediately.

Andreessen Horowitz has been busy. On Monday, the firm also announced that it invested in Groupon’s $950 million round of fund-raising. The firm invests in very small Web companies and very big ones, and the Bump and Groupon investments exemplify both ends of the spectrum.

Better Personal Advertising

First up today was Michael Greenberg presenting Better Personal Advertising. Mike wants to manage online identity on behalf of consumers so that they can maintain multiple identities for different types of sites, say photo, career, etc. and present themselves better in those different contexts.

Mike's customer acquisition strategy is weak at this point, and he also has a rather broad strategy in approaching this market. While I do believe there is an interesting opportunity in identity management, I am going to need to work much more closely with Mike to extract the nuggets out of his idea, and give shape to a viable go to market strategy.

Remote Stylist

Then Kelly Fallis pitched Remote Stylist, a personalized interior decoration advice service coupled with e-commerce in the domain of furniture and furnishings. Kelly's business has already done about $150,000 in revenue in 2010, which tells me that she has successfully validated at least some of her assumptions. Kelly has a lot of gaps in her customer acquisition strategy, as well as positioning, and she is seeing customers from commercial and residential clients. All this is too broad, and needs tightening up on multiple dimensions.

I like the business idea a lot, and in 1M/1M, we know a lot about building Web 3.0 and e-commerce businesses, so I would love to work with Kelly to help her figure out the various nuances of building a successful e-commerce business, especially one that differentiates on personalization. I have repeatedly said that personalization is an open opportunity in Web businesses, and needs to be tapped this decade. For Kelly, a good starting point would be the 1M/1M Curriculum, where we can offer her a lot more on the subject.

BizzGenie

Next Sajeeva Bora with tekMunk Software Solutions discussed BizzGenie, a business software concept to help retailers manage the decision-making between "shop floors and top floors." Sajeeva and his cofounders have good domain knowledge of the retail business, but have not yet done sufficient validation of the idea. He is looking for money and naturally, getting rejected by investors for lack of validation. As I have said before, this is not the right stage to look for money. There's more work to be done to prepare for a funding round.

Food Is Our Medicine Vision

Nwenna Kai then presented Food Is Our Medicine Vision, an online training concept through which she wants to teach community leaders how to create healthier living concepts like organic gardens, etc. in urban areas. Nwenna has surveyed about 200 readers of her blog, and they have told her that they would be willing to pay $400 to $800 for such courses.

Nwenna came to the roundtable with the question: What now? Where do I begin? Well, that's a rather large question to answer in five minutes, but she obviously needs to start validating her business within that group of 200 users who have said they're willing to pay for her offering.

Udemy

Up last was Gagan Biyani pitching Udemy, an online marketplace for educators and experts to teach various topics. Gagan has about 150 completed courses on the site so far, and about 10 of those are monetizing. He has run some experiments within the entrepreneurship training vertical, and has seen success when he has brought on known thought leaders. However, he faces the problem that the top tier thought leaders are unwilling to set up shop on his site. They have their own programs under their own brands.

Interestingly, Nwenna, who pitched right before Gagan, would be very interested in setting up shop on Udemy, and teaching her concepts and bringing her audience onto Udemy. We did this spot validation at the roundtable, and I believe, Gagan got a customer. However, I'd like to see a more focused, vertical specific go-to-market strategy in Udemy. At some level, Gagan's focus on entrepreneurship courses doesn't really align with Nwenna's target audience.

I have thought a lot about how to make an entrepreneurship education and eco-system scalable and accessible to a vastly larger number of people. The answer to that question, I believe, is the 1M/1M Premium Lounge. In fact, at a time when we're facing severe youth unemployment in America and Europe, and the emerging markets are just starting to build their entrepreneurship eco-systems, we really need to think deeply on how more and more young people can be efficiently, rapidly and cost-effectively be trained in entrepreneurship.

You can listen to the recording of today's roundtable here. Recordings of previous roundtables are all available here. You can register for the next roundtable here.

internet marketing

Thanks God we are done with celebrating and can start working! Here’s one essential checklist for you to start:

1. Acknowledge Your Biggest Fans

Do you have fans that re-tweet your posts, email your articles to friends, and send new business your way? What have you done for them? Have you at least taken the time to thank them?

You should always monitor your brand, your website link and your own name (I use SocialMention). Every time someone says something nice about you, you should thank them. If you can do something else in return, by all means do.

2. Understand the Golden Rule of Blogging

Most blogs don’t appeal to the audience they’re writing for. The writing may be good, but the topics aren’t. Let’s say you sell furniture. Your blog shouldn’t be about your specials, the new employee you hired or about your vacation to Hawaii. Your blog should be about furniture.

Always ask yourself this question: who am I writing for? What kind of content do they want? It doesn’t matter if you don’t offer all the services you write about. For example, I own an Internet marketing agency and my audience is business owners. But, I don’t only write about online marketing; I write about topics that are of interest to business owners, such as lowering costs, motivating employees and off-line marketing.

Find out what your audience wants and give it to them.

3. Use Decoy Offers

Have you ever wondered why some stores sell an item for $100 and in the price tags says “Was $200″? It makes the current price look a lot better. Some people might think $100 is a lot of money for that item, but hey, it was $200, so you’re getting a great deal, right? Well, believe it or not, it works. This is because everything is either a great deal or an awful deal based on what you compare it with.

Psychologists call this “the principle of contrast.”  How can you use this to your benefit? My favorite way is to present two or more offers. One will be your current offer and then you’ll add some decoy offers. The decoy offers will be really bad deals, but they’ll make your main offer look great. For example, you can sell one can of your product at $19 and three cans at $25 with free shipping and feature this last offer as the weekly special. Try it; it works like a charm and there’s nothing unethical about it. You’ll keep your main offer and all you’re doing is making it look better by adding some not-so-attractive offers.

4. Write Your Marketing Copy First and Develop Your Product Around It

I’ve found this tactic to be extremely effective. Instead of creating a product and then writing the marketing message, I like writing the copy first because by trying to sell it with words, I get a much better understanding of what the audience really wants and I can give them that product or service.

5. People Buy from People, Not Companies

Your customers might have known your company first, but they bought from you because they liked you or the salesperson they dealt with. This is especially true in B2B. The takeaway here is: do a good job explaining how your company can help your clients but do an even better job connecting with your prospects at a personal level.

Activity is picking back up after the holidays on our sister site, the Internet marketing hub Sphinn. Last week, as most of us settled back into a regular work week, the hot topics on Sphinn centered on whether Google’s search quality is declining and how to scale local marketing.

In our “Discussion of the Week,” we asked Does Local Marketing Scale? and received a handful of replies on that topic — but not a lot of agreement. But our pick for best comment of the week came from a different Sphinn thread, Three’s a Trend: The Decline of Google Search Quality. In that discussion, Sphinn member rebeccagill of Web Savvy Marketing shared this opinion of Google’s search results:

I absolutely love Google and Matt Cutts, but lately it seems the article and press release websites are taking over search results with content that has zero value or makes little sense. I tell SEO clients to stay clear of such practices, but when they pop up in results, it is hard to keep nagging everyone (and more importantly getting them to listen) about doing the right thing.

Agree? Disagree? Read more of that discussion and share your thoughts over on Sphinn. There’s also a dissenting opinion in a different thread, Google’s Decline: Myth or Fact?, that’s worth checking out. Meanwhile, here’s a look at all of the popular Sphinn stories from the past week.

Most Comments

  • Three's a Trend: The Decline of Google Search Quality – Anil Dash points to three separate articles bemoaning the perceived decline in Google's search results. But not all of the early commenters there agree. Do you?

  • DOTW: Does Local Marketing Scale? – Over the past month there has been a lot written about the Google and Groupon deal – why it did or did not make sense for either company – but the Ad Age article "Why Google Dropped Groupon and Local Just Doesn't Scale" raised some interesting points about why a service like Groupon – any platform based service like it – simply won't work long term. For this week's Discussion of the Week (DOTW) I'm curious to hear what the local and hyper local folks – the ones actually doing the boots on the ground work with local businesses – have to add to this topic. Do you have clients using Groupon or something similar? Is there a real value proposition provided by services like Groupon for local merchants?

Stock Making Money

What does Obama's choice of Gene Sperling as his new top economic adviser mean? Roosevelt Institute fellows and New Deal 2.0 friends weigh in. This post originally appeared at New Deal 2.0.

Thomas Ferguson, Senior Fellow at the Roosevelt Institute and Professor of Political Science at U Mass, Boston:

Before he joined Treasury as Geithner's "Counselor," Sperling "earned" almost $900,000 advising Goldman Sachs on its philanthropic ventures, plus almost half a million dollars more from the Philadelphia Stock Exchange. Never mind the fees and honoraria he picked up from all the other financial luminaries. The key point is that payments on this scale to such political figures do not represent normal market rates for real services. He took in more from Goldman alone than many full time lobbyists earn in a year. What the White House really just announced are the names of the financial monsters with gold-plated access to the highest levels of economic policy making. That is, the winners of a rigged, money-driven lottery, and the people paying are going to be the rest of the citizenry. It's enough to drive one to drink a giant pot of tea.

Bo Cutter, Senior Fellow at the Roosevelt Institute and served as leader of Obama's OMB transition team:

Gene Sperling is a very able man, whether or not he is a good choice as Chair of The National Economic Council is a different question. My own view is that both the President and the nation require a fundamentally different economic policy. Gene is certainly capable of delivering that policy but is he temperamentally ready to lead in developing it, and has President Obama asked for it?

Marshall Auerback, Senior Fellow at the Roosevelt Institute:

President Obama has spoken of Reagan as a transformational president, and he was quite dismissive of the Clinton Administration during the 2008 primaries. Yet with the appointment of yet another Clintonista, Gene Sperling, one would be hard-pressed to find any differentiating factor between the Clinton and Obama presidencies. Arguably, the current administration is even worse, since Clinton at least had a few progressive voices such as Robert Reich in his Cabinet. True, Clinton faced relatively minor problems while Obama is neck-deep in recession and must deal with stagnant income growth. The difference in conditions allowed the former president to reshape his administration by positioning and spin doctoring, which provided the illusion of success. But Obama can only succeed by altering outcomes. Americans want jobs, lower unemployment, economic growth, a reduced deficit and an end to the recession. They will not be assuaged or appeased by nice speeches or perceived moves to the center via "triangulation".

Edward Harrison, Founder of Credit Writedowns and New Deal 2.0 Contributor:

The Gene Sperling pick is very much in line with what I expected now that the Obama Administration has moved into re-election mode. Beside making the technical recovery stick, above all, the administration wants to present a more pro-incumbent business face. The Sperling announcement allows them to do so without being perceived on the left as completely submitting to Wall Street. There is nothing objectionable about Gene Sperling's positions on issues of substance for the Democratic base. However, in my view, the Sperling appointment is another indication of the revolving door between Wall Street and politics. Sperling is yet another Clinton appointee who left for big money on Wall Street only to re-appear in the Obama Administration. How do the French put it? Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.

Lynn Parramore, Editor of New Deal 2.0 and Media Fellow at the Roosevelt Institute:

Welcome to another episode of 'As the Revolving Door Turns', a depressing soap opera that has become a signature of the Obama administration. Sperling is yet another example of an adviser with close ties to Wall Street formed by chains of big money. He is also a known deficit hawk -- just the sort of discredited economic thinking we should be leaving behind as the nation continues to suffer. This sounds like good news for Wall Street; bad news for the American people.

This, of course, will upset some people. Let me give my disclosure: I’ve never been foreclosed on.

But many years ago I lost a house due to lack of money (after my first business, but before my second, third, fourth).

Close family members also have lost homes when I was younger and it had a profound impact on me. I also know many people in the process of foreclosure and I get the pain that it causes

Nevertheless, there is a positive side to foreclosure.

1) People have more money. This is common sense.  If you aren’t paying $2500 a month on your mortgage then you have an extra $2500 a month to spend.  Many of the foreclosures are occurring not because people lost their jobs (although that’s certainly part of it) but because mortgage rates got adjusted higher after scam mortgage issuers enticed borrowers with artificially low starter rates. The rates got higher, the borrower couldn’t pay, so he stopped. Hence, more money each month to spend for the borrower.

So  what do people do with the money? They pay down credit card debt. Its no surprise that since mid-2009, when foreclosures began going through the roof, that the stock of PRAA (the largest credit card debt collector) has gone up almost 300%. And their competitor, ASFI has gone up almost 500%! People don’t enjoy being in debt and giving up on the mortgage allows them to pay down and consolidate their smaller debts. Again, you can argue with this, but the proof is in the strong ability of the companies that buy debt from the banks to collect on those debts.  Additionally, personal consumer expenditures are at an all-time high. You can argue if this is good or bad. People stop paying their mortgage, they start buying things at the local mall, personal spending goes to all-time highs. Fact. Is this good? Well, more spending ultimately leads to more jobs. So you decide.

2) Foreclosed houses are cheap for investors. This is common sense as well. If the bank owns a home all they want to do is get rid of the property and get it off the books. The banks are overloaded right now with foreclosed properties. You can buy many properties for 10% of what they were initially sold for or less. The downside is that you are buying them “as is”, i.e. the bank did not make any repairs and the prior owners probably left the home in a state of extreme disrepair. But if you are handy, have the money, and want to work hard at navigating the loopholes and disadvantages of buying a foreclosed home then the advantages are extreme (you make a lot of money).  At some point the opportunity for investors is so great that a floor will be put in place on housing prices.

3) You can stll live in your home after you stop paying. I’m not recommending people stop making mortgage payments. The disadvantage is that your credit becomes so bad you might not even be able to rent again after you finally get evicted. But actually getting kicked out of your home after you stop paying the mortgage is often a six to eighteen month process depending on the lender and the state. So you have a place to live while you plan the next big move in your life, all the while you save the amount you would’ve spent on mortgages (and probably the money you would’ve spent on basic repairs).

4) Unemployment rate will eventually go down faster. This seems weird – why would unemployment go down faster. Here’s the basic idea: unemployment, like any market, is a function of supply and demand. Supply of jobs matched by the supply of demand for those jobs. The more people who own homes (i.e. are prevented from making a quick move) the more problematic it is for employers who want to hire people because their supply is purely local, i.e. the people who live in the surrounding area. The more supply there will be around the country. This doesn’t matter as much now with a 9%+ unemployment rate (there is plenty of supply) but as the economy continues to improve, this will make an enormous difference.

5) Banking regulations will improve. The banks are a mess and every day it seems there is a new scandal about who was foreclosed on inappropriately. This is a national shame and embarrassment. Already banks have slowed down their foreclosure rates (so the benefits of numbers 1-4 will keep increasing) as they look through their regulations and improve things so this doesn’t happen again and to as great an extent.

Ultimately the pain, embarrassment, and financial distress of being foreclosed on is not worth the benefits. But short-term, the foreclosure process is one part of the process of how a capitalist economy heals itself. Consumers end up with more money, employers have more possibilities to fill jobs (once things improve), other debts get paid off, spending goes up (temporarily), and banks improve their regulations.
